The River Ness has played a crucial role in the development of Soeycasting, a technique used by salmon anglers. Alexander Grant, the famed ‘Wizard of the Ness’, set the first world record i Speycasting in 1895. He cast a distance of 59 metres, a record that stood for 110 years until broken 120 years later by Inverness Speycaster Scott Mackenzie with a cast of 62 metres. A Grant Memorial tournament, held in September of 2015 as part of the first Scotland’s Salmon Festival, was won by Norwegian Speycaster Geir Hansen of Bergen with a cast of 52 metres.

The 2017 tournament, to be staged on Friday and Saturday, September 1 and 2, is being organised by Inverness Angling Club in association with Scott Mackenzie of Mackenzie Fly Fishing. The open competition will involve all competitors in two heats on the Friday and one on Saturday morning. There will be three finals on the Saturday afternoon - junior (17 and under), ladies and the top six in the open competiton.

Prizes will include silver-plated Centenary Quaichs for winners and runners up in open and ladies competitions, plus cash awards of £1,000, £500 and £300 for open first, second and third, and £500 and £300 for the winning lady and runner-up.
